Organic Pasta, Mixed Veggie & Sweet Potato Puree – 8 Months +

According to my pediatrician, the average 6- to 10-month old should be eating at least 4 tablespoons of grains or cereals each day.  Admittedly, upon entering his 8 month birthday, I had only been feeding my son a tablespoon of his Earth’s Best Organic Oatmeal Cereal each morning and the occasional Happy Baby Teether when we are on the go.  Although I am aware of how important whole grains are for an adult, I naively prepared my child’s meals without taking into consideration just how important the absent food group was; whole grains and cereals are critical for sustaining your infant’s energy levels.  They contain important B complex vitamins, zinc, magnesium and fiber – important not only to maintain a healthy digestive system and prevent constipation, but also a necessary component to build a healthy immune system.

3 Most Effective Things to Do to Increase Breast Milk Supply

This topic took a couple months for me to truly hit the nail on head.  I have had one son.  So I have had one experience with breastfeeding, and for the most part, it has been a positive one.  But in the beginning, while your boobs are trying to figure out just how much milk they need to be producing to sustain your hungry child, it can be rather challenging to understand exactly what needs to be done in your diet to ensure you never run low on milk… baby’s feeding schedules can be fickle, and it’s important to be prepared.  I’ve read pages and pages of advice on how to increase my milk supply, but in the end, these three things worked the best for both my sister and I.

Immune-Boosting Chicken, Parsnip & Butternut Squash Puree

With the flu season upon us, I know several mommies—including myself—who are on the lookout for immune-boosting foods to feed their kiddos in hopes that they will dodge the flu-bullet this winter.  Lucky for me, my son enjoys many of those immunity building ingredients, but there was one in particular that caught my eye, and my curiosity, at the grocery store: the parsnip.

I am always looking to add new and different fruits and vegetables to Kaden’s diet in attempts to broaden his taste-palate (crossing my fingers that I will not end up with a picky eater… but, we all know that road can lead anywhere), and I placed one of these funny bugle-shaped vegetables into my cart hoping that it would be a winner in both taste, as well as flu-fighting benefits.  Once again, luck was upon me, and we will be adding this nutrient rich root veggie to Kaden’s food throughout the flu season (it’s best in the winter months).

DIY Ugly (Cute) Christmas Sweater - for Kids!

When did festive, ‘ugly’, Christmas sweaters become a tradition in the otherwise innocent and cheery holiday that is Christmas?  I didn’t attend my first Ugly Christmas Sweater party until I was 25 years old, but apparently, I’ve missed out on several years of weird and unusual Christmas sweater-wearing each passing holiday season prior.  Despite never attending one prior to my 25th year of life, I took the DIY Christmas sweater agenda on for both myself and my husband (boyfriend at the time) pretty intensely when we were invited to our first.  I think I made our matching sweaters in one day, working hard into the night, stressing over every detail.  Our sweaters came out more cute than ugly, but the glued on string of lights made it all worth while, and every detail of each character was something I felt especially proud of.

Fool-Proof, All-Natural Diaper Rash Remedy (Plus our Favorite All-Natural Diaper Rash Creams)!

When my son was 5 weeks old he developed his first really awful diaper rash.  As a mother, it is very heart wrenching to see your child squirm in pain each time you go to clean their little, perfect bums due to red, sensitive skin and blisters (if it gets that bad).  Without sharing too much information—and safe-guarding the future relationship I hope to have with my son should he ever read this post—I knew that the reason he developed the rash was his overactive, uh, digestive system.  We were constantly changing diapers and rubbing his delicate baby skin, and the evidence of such reared its ugly head in the form of a painful rash.

Baby and Toddler Colds

As I take a swig of DayQuil to deal with with my own cold, I realize that taking care of my children’s colds is not so easy.  Toddlers and infants are not afforded the luxury of two full isles at Walgreens lined with medicine promising to make the sniffles go away.  It just is not safe.  To make matters worse, an on-going cold can lead to ear infections or sinus infections.  I have tried everything to make my babies’ sniffles go away, and after a lot of trial and error (and money) I have achieved the best results a mother could hope for.  These are the steps I use so my children sleep soundly, and in effect, as do I.

The Force Awakens- Star Wars Gift Guide

The newest Star Wars film opens in theaters this month and everyone is in on the action. Some of my favorite kids shops are allowing the force to be with us this season and these are my top picks. These items are going at lightspeed… so while shopping, practice getting in touch with the Force and say “This is not the Star Wars merchandise you are looking for…” to the shopper holding the last shirt.

Chicken, Apple and Sweet Potato Puree

When my daughter turned 9 months old my mother suggested that I give her chicken in her baby food. My first thought was “oh that is so gross.” I had seen the gerber baby food on the shelf that had chicken in it. A white puree of mystery meat that I just could not stomach. With my daughter I relied a lot on organic store bought baby food.

I worked over sixty hours a week and felt baby food making would be  too time consuming for me and my parents, who took care of my daughter. (I will blog later on the best store bought baby foods because in no way am I opposed to them.)  With my son I decided that I needed to be home with my kids. I now had time to make my own baby food. My son is an EATER and sooner than expected he was ready to have animal protein in his food. I had to suck it up and do my research. Organic chicken and egg yolks seemed to be the best path. I had tried store bought chicken baby food and the only ones he really liked were the Sprout foods. He was going through them like crazy, and it did get a tad expensive. So here I am creating my own recipes and my son loves this one.

2015 Holiday Gift Guide for a Newborn

There are certain ages that we find especially difficult when it comes to choosing an appropriate gift for birthdays or holidays.  Two specific ages shockingly are those itty bitty brand new babies - because mom probably just received about everything she needed for him or her at her baby shower or purchased on her own - and age one.  We will be posting a gift guide for the difficult one-year old soon, but in the meantime, for those of you who have a friend or relative who just or will be having a new, precious babe in the coming days or weeks… this gift guide is for you.  We like all the items on this list because there are certain items that he or she can grow with, while simultaneously still getting use out of them in their immobile newborn state, and also some that are really great for mom - because let’s be honest, this Christmas is for her, too.
